Weekly Update

September 30, 2013

A note from Mrs. Horn….

 Dear Families,
We are so excited about our first field trip on Friday, October 4th.  Your child will need…

  • a packed lunch with a drink.
  • to wear old tennis shoes that can get dirty.
  • to wear a long sleeve t-shirt (we will put your child’s class t-shirt over their long sleeve shirt Friday morning) and long pants.
  • bring a jacket depending on the weather.

We are going to have so much fun!

Keep sending in those donations for the Harmony Hustle.  We can’t wait till October 11th when we will have our Hustle outside during PE time.  Families are invited to come walk/run with us.

Come back to school that evening from 6-8:00 for the Harmony Harvest.  It is a fun filled night with games, jumpies and prizes.  Don’t forget about our class auction items.  If you are unable to make it to the Harvest, but you'd like to buy a ticket to one of these events, just send a note with payment in your child's folder and I will put them on the list. Here’s a sneak peak of our auction items:

Writing Workshop

This week we will learn how to continue to speak and listen to each other as we form opinions and write about them.  Speaking and listening are both very important language and social skills.  They sure do enjoy sharing their opinions and explaining why they have a particular opinion.

Handwriting

Handwriting instruction will focus on developing fine motor skills as well as the proper formation of the following letters: Kk and Ll.

Word Study

This week, we will explore the letters Kk and Ll. Ask your child about the letter sound chants for both.

We will also learn how to read and write these words that will be added to our Word Wall: she, we, had. Have your child sing you the songs for these words.

Math

We will  review counting strategies and write about how and why we use counting.

Science

This week we will continue our science unit on plants and learn about what plants need to grow.  We will also learn about the lifecycle of an apple and pumpkin while at Huber’s Farm.

Weekly Update

September 16, 2013

A note from Mrs. Horn….

We have a lot of things going on this week, so please be sure to check the weekly planner each evening!

There are some students who are having a hard time with spelling and identifying the word wall words.  Please be sure you are going over these with your students each evening!  Have them play games finding them, have them write them in shaving cream, chalk, or any other fun way to help them remember the words.  These word wall words make up the majority of the words they see in text and try to write, so it is very important for them to quickly recognize them.
Reminders ….

*Please help your kindergartener learn their lunch and bus number.

*It’s time for all kindergartners to practice tying their own shoes. Thanks for your help with this at home.

*Be sure to be reading at least 10 minutes a night and record your book titles.
